REFLECTIONS

My work is based on personal psychological processes and incorporates the gathering of impressions and natural objects from my daily environment.

The last few years I have been exploring lines, dots or enclosed shapes and layering as metaphores of life, using mostly paper as my main medium :

- Dots (or enclosed mass) as points of incubation or moments of awareness.

- Lines as ever ongoing or continuing movements.

- Layeredness as multiplications in our life and the many lives lived.

I see my work as a medium, where my interests in human sciences, spiritual processes and visual arts can come together, expressing our human condition.

NEW REALITIES

By being totally present with all my senses, I try to translate an obscure and constantly changing world into a visual language, wishing for an invisible world to become more accessable and hoping to create a meeting place in which body and mind could merge into each other (or become one of the same world). This middle ground or common space might invite new external elements to become part of it, It may gain in strength, can create layeredness and finally new realities.

NIEUWE REALITEITEN

Door zintuigelijk aanwezig te zijn, probeer ik een niet eenduidige wereld, die zich bovendien voortdurend veranderd, in beeldtaal om te zetten, om aldus het onzichtbare zichtbaar te maken. Hiermee hoop ik een ontmoetingsplek te creëren, waarbij lichaam en geest elkaar voortdurend beïnvloeden en op die manier de mogelijkheid biedt, dichter naar elkaar toe te groeien. Het ontstaan van een 'middelground', of te wel een gemeenschappelijke plek, die geenszins een grijze massa is, maar eerder elementen van buitenaf uitnodigt, waardoor een zwak signaal in sterkte kan toenemen en een gelaagdheid kan vormen en vervolgens een nieuwe realiteit creëert.

WAY OF WORKING

It all begins with a flirtation, something that calls for my attention, something in resonance with my subconscious, which is thus latently present in me. The flirt, the subject or the image announces itself and finds its expression through the act of painting, photography, writing or any other creative action.

Word and image in my paintings
Words or pieces of writing often play a role in my paintings. They mix with or match the image, but the meaning can also be totally independent of the picture in which case they then have somehow a resonance with my state of being at that particular time. The function then is similar to that of a mantra. They sometimes take on the role of a brush stroke and may have become indecipherable. Yet a text can be the original starting point of the total image, being the source of inspiration, or the flirt where it all started.

Woorden of flarden tekst spelen vaak een rol en mengen zich met het beeld, alsof ze een penseelstreek zijn. De inhoud van de tekst is meestal niet van belang en is dan ook niet altijd te ontcijferen. Toch kunnen ze mijn oorspronkelijke uitgangspunt zijn, omdat ze resoneren met dat wat ik op dat moment ervaar.

Het is vanuit het lichamelijk zijn dat we waarnemen en het lichaam is dan ook meestal het centrale beeld in mijn werk. Het lichaam als een levende “doos”, waarin we onze ervaringen verzamelen en van waaruit we onze innerlijke belevingswereld naar buiten kunnen dragen. Wellis waar is het lichaam op mijn canvas is niet altijd direct herkenbaar. Soms is slechts alleen een deel ervan weergegeven, of is het alleen een verwijzing ernaar, zoals een schaduw, een ‘leeg’ kledingstuk of een harnas.

Vaak zijn we ons niet bewust van ons lichamelijk zijn, pas als we pijn hebben, moe zijn, warmte of kou voelen, of plezier aan ons lijfelijk zijn beleven, ervaren we ons lichaam.

Het schilderen op zich ervaar ik als een intense lichamelijke handeling. Hiervan werd ik mij meer bewust toen ik met mijn zogenaamde abstracte landschappen begon, waarin hand en armbewegingen zich herhalen. Het is vaak door herhaling dat we ons ergens van bewust worden.
